True Heroes Films was established in 2006 in the Netherlands and moved in 2013 to Geneva.

A core team of award winning filmmakers, communication specialists and developers with knowledge and experience in human rights is governed by a committee comprising prominent human rights practitioners and experts. Our revenue comes from projects and partnerships.

FILMMAKING

True Heroes Films produces films in a variety of formats, from short films and social media clips, to portraits and longer form documentaries covering a range of human rights issues.

COMMUNICATION SUPPORT

We work with our partners to choose the best messages, tone and tools to engage target audiences.

EVENT COVERAGE

Multi-cam live-streaming, broadcast quality footage, high-end audiovisuals. Interviews on the spot and summaries, give events greater exposure and lasting value.

TRAINING

We teach creative storytelling, how to engage with people when filming and technical expertise including camera work, editing, documentation and security.

CLIENTS

We work with major media outlets like BBC, TV Monde, The Guardian and The New York Times. And organisations like the UN, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International as well as Governments.

STUDIO

We have a fully equipped studio in Geneva, next to the UN building and at the centre of international human rights work.

GISELLA REINA

Gisella Reina is the Philanthropy and Partnership Director at ActionAid Switzerland and Chair of HURIDOCS. Gisella has thirty years of professional experience in philanthropy and organisational development.

HANS THOOLEN

Hans Thoolen started as founder of the Dutch Lawyers Committee for Human Rights (NJCM), became Executive Secretary of the International Commission of Jurists, first Director of the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights and served 15 years in the UN. He was co-founder of HURIDOCS, International Alert, True Heroes Films and the Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders.

Margaret Sekaggya

Margaret Sekaggya is a Ugandan lawyer and academic who was the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights Defenders from 2008 to 2014. She has both taught law and practiced as Judge of the High Court of Uganda and is the Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC). She is the author of many publications on constitutional issues, human rights and environmental law.

Julian Fleet

Julian Fleet is Permanent Observer and Head of Delegation of the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) to the United Nations in Geneva. He has worked in the United Nations and other international organizations for more than 25 years. He also practiced as lawyer and teaches law.
